There are 3 basic kinds of clefs that indicate positions for the 3 primary notes in the key of C (C, F and G):
| • The C clef | sets Middle C | |
| • The F clef | sets the note "F" below Middle C | |
| • The G clef | sets the note "G" above Middle C |
|
Although, historically used for vocal parts, currently these Clefs are mostly used in orchestra. The Alto Clef is used for Viola, and the Tenor Clef is used for Cello, Bassoon, and Tenor Trombone. In older choral music you may find other forms of these Clefs indicating different lines of the Staff as Middle C - depending on range of the part in question. The thing to remember is whatever line is indicated by the C Clef is Middle C. |
