The Clefs

There are 3 basic kinds of clefs that indicate positions for the 3 primary notes in the key of C (C, F and G):

• The C clef sets Middle C
• The F clef sets the note "F" below Middle C
• The G clef sets the note "G" above Middle C
The C clef has 2 common forms still in use today - the Alto Clef, and the Tenor Clef (Ex. 3).

Ex. 3

Although, historically used for vocal parts,
currently these Clefs are mostly used in orchestra.
The Alto Clef is used for Viola,
and the Tenor Clef is used for
Cello, Bassoon, and Tenor Trombone.

In older choral music you may find other forms of these Clefs
indicating different lines of the Staff as Middle C
- depending on range of the part in question.
The thing to remember is whatever line is indicated
by the C Clef is Middle C.

The most commonly used clefs are the Treble Clef, and the Bass Clef.
The Treble Clef is a G Clef that sets the note G (above middle C) to the 2nd line of the Staff,
and the Bass Clef is an F Clef that sets the note F (below middle C) to the 4th line of the Staff.

The Treble Clef and Bass Clef are both used for Piano on the Grand Staff (Ex. 4).
